Microsoft Security Advisory

Vulnerability in Windows Shell could allow remote code execution

Microsoft has released a new security advisory as of July 16, 2010.  The vulnerability can be exploited via USB (thumb) drives, network shares or a part of Internet Information services (IIS) called WebDAV.  When exploited malicious code can be executed on the target computer.  The link and shortcuts do not have to be executed but only read by WIndows to launch the exploit.  If the user is an administrator on their computer a worm and two Trojans can be installed for further exploits.

  • Windows Server 2008 for 32-bit Systems and Windows Server 2008 for 32-bit Systems Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems and Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems Service Pack 2
  • Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems and Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems Service Pack 2
  • Windows 7 for 32-bit Systems
  • Windows 7 for x64-based Systems
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64-based Systems

The 2010 Computer Help Key Technology Scholarship was awarded to Keith Hamilton, a graduating senior at Zion Benton Township High School.  Keith plans to attend Milwaukee School of Engineering in the fall.

The Computer Help Key, Inc. Technology Scholarship is a one time scholarship directed to students of Zion-Benton Township High School (ZBTHS) who have demonstrated a positive academic track record and have a strong interest in pursuing a College Degree or Certificate program, preferably in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field. The application process included completing written essays about the student’s present achievements and future academic and career goals.
